Black Powder (Warlord Games)
Black Powder
This will cater for the 1809 napoleonic project and the American Civil War collection.
The ACW has a supplement called Glory Hallelujah, which amongst other specialists period rules, has a rule that prevents a unit from firing if it has just moved more than once.
For the small table, this is a handy rule as it discourages those big moves that the rules are famed for.
1809 does not yet have its own supplement, but there is one called Clash of Eagles that looks at the Russians and it does make reference to the Austrians and of course in any case comes with a raft of napoleonic flavoured suggestions.
The rules can divide opinion with the two main criticisms being their generic nature and that due to the orders (activation) system, some units can frustratingly sit on their hands for several turns.
Both are easily addressed. The rules have a lot of bolt on attributes for units that help bring more period character to the game. So things like ‘Poor Shooters’, Unreliable’, ‘Stubborn’ and ‘Superbly Drilled’, can bring a lot of character to an individual battle.
As for units not activating, there is the ‘Follow Me’ option for commanders, the fact that within proximity of an enemy (12”) units get to act on their initiative, that units in march column can always issue 1 order and that Army Commanders have a range of abilities that can improve the chances of getting a unit to move.
In addition, it is so easy to house rule favourite mechanics - so one could use a modifier if a unit has not been moving as one would have ‘hoped’ for:-)
